Could Your PCOS Symptoms Be The Reason?

PCOS

What Are the PCOS Symptoms

PCOS. Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome.

As many as 1 in 10 women may have this condition, but for some it can take years to ever be diagnosed. So let’s look at some of the warning signs. Common symptoms of PCOS include:

  • Missed or irregular periods
  • Excessive hair growth on face, chest, back, thumbs, or toes
  • Thinning hair or male-patterned baldness
  • Acne, oily skin, or dandruff
  • Difficulty getting pregnant
  • Skin tags in the armpit or neck area
  • Anxiety or depression
  • Pelvic pain
  • Weight gain

Hormones That Affect PCOS Symptoms

PCOS is a hormonal condition, but it is so much more than that. Women with PCOS tend to have high levels of androgens (male hormones) and low levels of progesterone. Insulin levels are also often high, increasing the risk for diabetes. But beyond these hormonal changes, PCOS can also be associated with:

  • Gut health and the microbiome
  • Stress
  • Inflammation
  • Exposure to environmental toxins

The only way to know if you have PCOS is to get a thorough evaluation with a qualified healthcare professional. In our office, we then look deeper to identify underlying patterns and causes so that we can support health as completely as possible.

PCOS Symptoms and Fertility

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) can have a significant impact on fertility due to hormonal imbalances that interfere with regular ovulation. One of the key symptoms of PCOS is irregular or absent menstrual cycles, which is often a sign that ovulation is not occurring consistently. Without regular ovulation, it becomes more difficult for women to conceive naturally.

Elevated levels of androgens (male hormones) in women with PCOS can also affect the quality of eggs, further complicating fertility. Additionally, insulin resistance, another common symptom of PCOS, can contribute to weight gain, which may also affect reproductive health.

However, managing PCOS through lifestyle changes, hormonal therapies, or fertility treatments can help many women successfully conceive. It’s important to address both the symptoms and the underlying hormonal imbalances for improved reproductive outcomes.
